Objective:

To apply my knowledge in the seaweed industry, marine science, and science in general to: 1.make the seaweed industry more innovative for the benefit of the farmers and the country at large by working with seaweed farmers to improve seaweed quality, add value to seaweed by making seaweed products, and increase seaweed production through new techniques of farming e.g. in deep waters; 2. to promote and expand integrated aquaculture especially of fish and seaweed, but other cultured produtcs as well; 3. to promote environmentally friendly aquactulture techniques so as to conserve the fragile environment in Tanzania and elsewhere. 4. to study the impact of climate change in seaweed farming and other sectors, and to propose/implement innovations for adapting, coping or mitigating impacts of climate change in various informal sector groups

Experience

Research on seaweed farming, integrated mariculture, and seaweed biofilters both in high tech and low tech regimes since 1996. Have also long experience in research on the impact of seaweed farming on the environment and the socioeconomics of the seaweed farming communities since 1992. Coordinating the Zanzibar Seaweed Cluster (as Facilitator) that is composed of the triple helix of leadership i.e. academia, government, and business. The Cluster composed works with seaweed farmers on adding value to seaweed by making seaweed products including soap, massage oils and food, improving quality of seaweed, combating die-offs and increasing production through a new technique of farming seaweed in deep waters. I am an International Trainer in Innovation and Cluster Facilitation. Other areas of research include studies on impact of climate change on seaweed farming and the informal sector including climate innovation, and video production on various aspects of marine sciences and socioeconomics.
